Geth's Girls Almost 12 Months On!
Strictly
Come Dancing is about to start and the SCD Message Boards have opened
again. It seems extremely odd not to have Geth in the line up and to be
honest it will take a while to get used to it. However the opening of
the message boards has brought back memories of the Gethin’s Girls'
thread and people have already been enquiring if this wonderful website
has been done by the Geth’s Girls which of course it has, and therefore
I felt it was time to do a quick update on what has been happening with
us.
At the time of my last report we were about to have our first face to
face meeting, goodness me that seems a long time ago, since then we
have met up in groups both large and small several times over the year
and in all parts of the country and have all become firm friends. Some
of us have met Geth (more than once in some cases) and he has been
completely wonderful to us, and we couldn’t be more grateful if we
tried. He said himself that the GG’s seems to be about being a group of
friends just as much as being about him, and he is right, it was him
that brought us together and he will always be our central core, but we
have found we have an enormous amount in common otherwise and I for one
can’t imagine what life would be like without all my GG friends now.
The massed ranks of the GGs will be meeting up twice over the course of
Strictly in order to watch the show together and if our previous
meetings are anything to go by the evenings will be filled with fun and
laughter with a fair amount of pink (our signature colour) on display
and Pimms drunk.
If it wasn’t for the Strictly Come Dancing message boards (and
Sparkling Champagne for starting the thread of course) I would not have
the last wonderful year, Thanks so much.
I am looking forward to what the next year will bring, fantastic things
for both Geth and ‘ his girls’ hopefully.
GG's Are Doing It For Charity
Not
that we want to blow our own trumpet or anything, but look what we've
got!
One
of the GG's - Gill - came up with the brilliant idea of compling a DVD
of Gethin & Camilla's progress thoughout Strictly Come Dancing.
Strangely enough, the rest of us jumped at the chance at
buying the
DVD so we could watch all their highlights again from the comfort of
our sofas, without having to rely on YouTube and annoying slow internet
connections.
We decided that the extra money raised from the
sale of the DVD's should go to this year's Blue Peter appeal - Disc
Drive - which is raising money for Barnado's Young Carers.
This
certificate, along with a lovely personalised letter, arrived in the
post this week addressed to us all!
A Brief History of the Gethin's Girls (so far)
The
thread entitled Gethin’s Girls was started on the Strictly Come
Dancing message boards on 21st November 2007 by Sparklingchampagne.
She
started it as a joke to start a list of girls willing to help Gethin
celebrate
his 30th birthday as he had no time in his busy schedule to find a date
of his
own.
As
you can imagine within a couple of days she was joined by
many other like minded girls including, Fiffy, Charlies Angel, Rhons
(Gethin
Geneth), Scattyjan, Claudiaforqueen, supaflawless, Fermyn, Chris1314,
Wingethinwin, Dancingjuiceylane, Strictlyaddiction and Muppet 1964.
These early mainstays of the GGs along with many who floated in and out
chatted
with each other about all things Gethin and by November 28th they had
reached
1000 posts.
On 30th November 2007
they were rewarded with a mention on the news
page of the
Strictly Come Dancing Website.
Over the next few weeks the original group were joined by
Gethin&Camilla,
BPbadgewinner1982, Bladenurse, Ger, Jan2555, Hellypot,
LittleMissBob, Gill, SparklyJules, Anaronkita and fabulousfantasticfan.
Together we lived the dream with Gethin and Camilla, both on
the
original GG thread and what became know as the Out of Hours lounge, a
separate
forum board that we used when the SCD message board closed at night.
Our finest moment of SCD was the week of the Waltz and Salsa, that was
a
magic night that will never be forgotten and the following week was
almost as
exciting.
Our
darkest hour was Gethin and Camilla’s elimination and many wondered if
we
would be able to carry on, but we picked ourselves up and used humour
to see us
through by starting a new thread in which we played out our own version
of the
SCD final, and what fun it was, it was great therapy for us and we
carried on posting
on the GG thread until the message boards closed by which time we had
posted
more than 8000 posts.
In the week that Gethin and Camilla left the competition the GGs were
again
acknowledged on the SCD website news page when a letter we had written
to Gethin and Camilla was posted on the front page.
Many of us were reluctant to sever our connections with the Gethin’s
Girls so
searched round for a new ‘home’. Charlies Angel set up our
present forum
board home, calling it the Sparkling Champagne Lounge in honour of our
founder
member. We have been chatting on there ever since and have
formed a
strong bond that will soon be cemented with actual face to face
meetings.
New members have joined us namely Ladyvelvet, coddled, Mary
Doll,
gethinforever and Mrs Snuggles and some have drifted away but we are
still
going strong and Gethin’s approval of our website and its planning has
spurred
us forward again. We hope that Gethin’s Girls will be around
for years to
come.
